The upwards bubble columns did work out pretty fine to me especially underwater obviously, except that for some reason, on top of them did not display the bubble popping particle (minecraft:bubble_pop) coming out of the water, just plain old bubbles going all the way up out of the water and then just disappearing there instead of them just popping.
