Setting up a semi-automatic farm using flowing water to bring produce to hoppers connected to a single chest.

5 hoppers in a row. All set up to meet in the middle and convey items into a chest under the center hopper. 1st hopper from the left doesn't seem to do anything, although 1st from the right does. Put a redstone block into each one, 4 out of 5 make it to the chest, 1st from the left is a greedy one and keeps one for himself. Tried placing the hopper from different (and same from the other) angles, nothing seemed to fix the problem.
UPDATE: When the hopper stops sending stuff to the adjacent hopper, it stops receiving things completely.
