I stood near the edge of a chunk and noticed that a chest was disappearing when I was looking a particular direction. Upon closer inspection, the chest wasn't the only thing disappearing...

As you can see, when I look directly at the chest, it is there, but when it is near the edge of the viewing frustum, it disappears, along with the rest of the chunk.
