Coal ore doesn't burn, or be burned up from coming in contact with fire. This is contrary to both real life, where coal "veins" can light on fire, provided there is fire nearby (and coal ore is Minecraft's equivalent), and coal blocks, which can burn, and don't spawn naturally.
