When shift-clicking lava buckets into active furnaces it will appear as though the lava bucket has been put in the furnace, but upon exiting the furnace menu, the furnace will not act as though there is fuel in it and will stay dormant if it runs out of its current fuel. When you click the furnace again, the bucket will then appear in your inventory.
