When breaking a block (with any tool) at the edges, you can move your mouse away from the block, and the animation will stay until the block is updated (be it by trying to break it again or by reloading the world). This works with any block. The easiest way to do this (atleast from what I have tested) is by being directly in front of the block, in a boat.
