I can access my friend's realm on 1.12, which is technically outdated. It seems that because of this, I cannot access this realm on 1.12.1. Trying to join on the later version will cause an error message saying that the server is still on 1.12. If you need to check any of my friend's realm information, his username is SlimeDude108.
