The bug

While playing in a vanilla multiplayer server, compasses held by individual players will occasionally give different readings, even after logging out, and reentering the server. This has happened as far as 1 k from spawn and 10k from spawn.

The compass appeared to be influenced by near by nether portals, and even other players holding the compass.
