I was trying to rename a stack of cobblestone to a new name to use for sorting. Put stack in anvil, type new name, click on new item to move to inventory... When you try to move the newly named stack to the inventory or hotbar it takes a level away but does not rename or move the stack. In the previous version had no problem renaming stacks of items...
