The bug
When a mob catches on fire, there is typically a "fire" animation on them. However if you are looking downwards (or near-downwards) in such a direction that the mob is "behind" you and still visible, the fire animation will disappear and be invisible on the mob, although they are still on fire and taking damage.
This affects every version that I have so far tested, back to 1.8 and likely further.
How to reproduce
- Set any mob (and possibly a player, too) on fire
- Fly/walk above/past then
- Look downwards, with them "behind" you, observe lack of fire animation
Probable cause
Due to similar reasons that the insides of blocks do not have textures, as the texture is only designed to face in a certain direction, and if you are "behind" the texture, it won't be visible.
