Place a cauldron with water then a block then a comparator with some redstone in front of the comparator. The redstone should be powered. Push the cauldron with a piston (note that this may work by just breaking it - haven't been able to test yet) so that the cauldron is no longer behind the comparator and this SHOULD deactivate the comparator and redstone but it does not. However to deactivate the comparator you can place a block next to it. This makes it seem to me that the comparator is not updating itself as there is no block update and there needs to be.
