I cannot make the "Thing" banner pattern.

The game will not allow me to make the "Thing" banner pattern. I have the enchanted apple and the paper, yet when I put it in a crafting table it will not allow me to craft the banner pattern. I grinded hard to find the apple and I am disappointed that I cannot craft the pattern. I think the bug is that the game does not register I have the enchanted apple, and may instead think it is a regular golden apple.
